General Characteristics

The Ward LaFrance M1 and its refined M1A1 variant were the standard heavy wreckers used by the US Army during World War II. Designed to recover and tow disabled light and medium tanks, as well as any other heavy wheeled vehicles, the M1A1 was vital for field maintenance and battlefield clearance.

Powerplant and Mobility

  • Engine: Continental 22-R in-line 6-cylinder gasoline engine (overhead-valve type).

Recovery Equipment

  • Front Winch: Capacity of 9,100 kg (20,000 lb). Used for self-recovery or pulling vehicles toward the front.
  • Rear Crane: Gar Wood single boom, hydraulically (later motor) operated.
    • Crane Winch Capacity: 21,500 kg (47,500 lb).
    • Crane Lifting Capacity: Up to 7,300 kg (16,000 lb) at short radius.
    • Slew: 180-degree traverse.
  • Tools: Carried one of the largest on-vehicle inventories of tools and equipment, including welding/cutting torches (oxygen/acetylene bottles), block and tackle, tow bars (A-frames), and various specialized recovery tools.
  • Stabilization: Equipped with outriggers at the rear and boom jacks to stabilize the truck during heavy lifts.
