Den M108 Howitzer is an American self-propelled 105 mm howitzer, first introduced in the early 1960s as a replacement for the M52 self-propelled howitzer. The M108 was powered by a Detroit Diesel turbocharged 8V-71T 8-cylinders 405 hp engine. It used the same hull and turret as the 155 mm M109 self-propelled howitzer, and components of the M113 armored vehicle. The M108 was phased out soon after the American intervention in the Vietnam War, as the M109’s 155 mm calibre was considered better fitted for modern war.

Mer info:

The M108 howitzer was a self-propelled artillery vehicle of the United States Army, designed to provide fire support to mechanized units. It was armed with a 105 mm howitzer, which could fire a variety of ammunition types, including high-explosive, smoke, illumination and nuclear shells. The M108 had a crew of five and could traverse its turret 360 degrees, allowing it to engage targets in any direction. The M108 was based on the same chassis and engine as the M109 howitzer, which had a larger 155 mm gun. The M108 was introduced in 1962 and saw service in the Vietnam War, where it was deployed to fire bases and provided artillery support to infantry and armored units. The M108 was phased out of service in 1975, as the M109 proved to be more effective and versatile. The M108 was also used by some NATO allies, such as Belgium, Brazil and Spain.
