Le Nieuport 27 (o Nieuport XXVII C.1 nelle fonti contemporanee) è stato un caccia sesquiplano francese progettato da Gustave Delage. Il 27 fu l'ultimo della linea di caccia monoposto Nieuport "V-strut" che iniziò con il Nieuport 10 del 1914. Esempi operativi completarono il molto simile Nieuport 24 e 24bis negli squadroni operativi alla fine del 1917 e molti sarebbero stati usati anche come addestratori avanzati.

General Characteristics and Role

The Nieuport 27 was a French single-seat fighter biplane, serving as one of the final derivatives of the successful line of Nieuport “V-strut” sesquiplanes that saw widespread use during World War I. A sesquiplane is an aircraft where one wing (usually the lower one) is significantly smaller than the other. The Model 27 retained the classic V-strut configuration supporting the wings but introduced structural improvements, notably a rounded rear fuselage and strengthened landing gear. It was intended as an interim fighter for the French Aéronautique Militaire before the larger, more powerful SPAD S.XIII became widely available, and was also used extensively by the British, Russian, and American air services.

Armament and Legacy

Alternative Armament: Earlier models sometimes featured an unsynchronized Lewis machine gun mounted on the upper wing (Pulpit mount), firing over the propeller.
Use by the US: Used by the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France as a primary fighter for initial combat squadrons until SPADs were delivered.
Training Role: After being phased out of frontline service, the Nieuport 27 served extensively as a light trainer for the rest of the war and into the post-war era.
