JDS Sawayuki (DD-125) is a Hatsuyuki-class destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The ship was built by IHI Maritime in Tokyo and commissioned into service on 15 Feb 1984.

General Characteristics and Role

The JS Sawayuki (DD-125) was the fourth ship of the Hatsuyuki-class destroyers built for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). This class marked a significant shift for the JMSDF as it was the first class of destroyers built with a completely gas turbine propulsion system (COGOG – Combined Gas or Gas), greatly enhancing their acceleration and responsiveness. The Hatsuyuki class was designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and served as the backbone of the JMSDF’s Destroyer Flotillas throughout the Cold War era and into the 21st century. The class represented a modern, multi-purpose warship designed to operate as a central component of task groups.

Propulsion and Performance

Propulsion: COGOG system: 2 x Kawasaki-Rolls Royce Olympus TM3B boost gas turbines and 2 x Kawasaki-Rolls Royce Tyne RM1C cruise gas turbines.
Maximum Speed: 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph).
Range: 4,500 nautical miles at 20 knots (8,300 km at 37 km/h).
CODOG/COGOG: The use of COGOG allowed the ship to switch between fuel-efficient cruise turbines for standard operations and powerful boost turbines for high-speed engagement.

Main Gun: 1 x OTO Melara 76 mm/62 compact gun.
Anti-Ship Missiles: 8 x Harpoon SSMs (fitted later).
ASW Weapons: 1 x Type 74 (ASROC) 8-cell launcher, 2 x Triple 324 mm torpedo tubes (for Homing Torpedoes).
