das Lockheed P-38 Lightning ist ein US-amerikanisches Kolben-Jagdflugzeug aus der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Entwickelt nach einer Anforderung des United States Army Air Corps, hatte die P-38 markante Zwillingsausleger und eine zentrale Gondel, die das Cockpit und die Bewaffnung enthielt. Die alliierte Propaganda behauptete, sie sei von der Luftwaffe als Gabelschwanz-Teufel und von den Japanern als "zwei Flugzeuge, ein Pilot" (2飛, "Ni hikéki, ippairotto") bezeichnet worden. Die P-38 wurde zum Abfangen, Tauchabbomben, Level-Bombardement, Bodenangriff, Nachtkampf, Fotoaufklärung, Radar und visuelle Nnachtssuche für Bomber und Evakuierungsmissionen verwendet, und ausgiebig als Langstrecken-Eskorte-Kämpfer, wenn sie mit Fallpanzern unter ihren Flügeln ausgestattet ist.
