The first M270s were delivered in 1983, and were subsequently adopted by several NATO and non-NATO militaries. The platform first saw service with the United States in the 1991 Gulf War. It has received multiple improvements since its inception, including the ability to fire guided missiles.

The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) is a mobile, armored rocket artillery system used by the United States and its allies. Here’s a breakdown of its key features:
Mobile and Armored: The M270 is built on a tracked chassis similar to the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, allowing it to travel across rough terrain and provide some protection for its crew of three (driver, gunner, and section chief).
Firepower: It launches a variety of rockets and missiles from two six-rocket pods, with a total capacity of 12 rockets. The rockets come in different ranges, with some exceeding 300 kilometers (186 miles). The M270 can also fire the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile for even longer-range attacks.
Firepower Delivery: The M270’s fire control system allows the crew to launch its entire rocket load in under a minute with high accuracy, even from a stationary position.
Deployment: Developed in the 1970s, the M270 has seen combat service in multiple conflicts and remains a significant part of the U.S. arsenal. Upgrades have been implemented, with the M270A1 being the current version used by the U.S. Army.
