The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior was a strategic bomber and reconnaissance aircraft designed for the United States Navy in the 1950s. It was the largest and heaviest carrier-based aircraft ever built, earning it the nickname “The Whale”. The A-3 had a crew of three and could carry up to 12,000 pounds of bombs or nuclear weapons. It also had a range of over 2,000 miles, allowing it to strike targets deep inside enemy territory. The A-3 served in various roles throughout its career, including electronic warfare, aerial refueling, and photo reconnaissance. It saw combat during the Vietnam War and the Gulf War, and was retired from active service in 1991.
