General Characteristics and Role

The Autoblinda Lancia Lince (“Lynx”) was an Italian light armored car used by the Royal Italian Army (Regio Esercito) during World War II and, significantly, by German and Italian forces after the 1943 Italian armistice. The Lince was essentially an unauthorized, but successful, copy of the British Daimler Scout Car (Dingo), captured examples of which had impressed Italian designers. It was produced by Lancia and was designed for reconnaissance, liaison, and escort duties. Its small size, decent speed, and four-wheel drive provided good agility on paved roads and suitable terrain, but its very light armor limited its use strictly to non-frontline roles.

Powerplant and Mobility

  • Engine: 1 x Lancia Astura V8 petrol engine.
  • Power Output: 70 hp (52 kW).
  • Maximum Speed (Road): 85-90 km/h (53-56 mph).
  • Range (Road): 350 km (217 mi).
  • Key Feature: The Lince featured a four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering system (though the steering mechanism was complex and often disabled later), which gave it excellent maneuverability in confined urban spaces.

Armament and Armor

  • Main Armament: 1 x 8 mm Breda Modello 38 machine gun (mounted in a small rotating turret or a pivot mount).
  • Ammunition: Approximately 1,000 rounds.
  • Armor (Max): 6 to 9 mm (0.24-0.35 in), thin enough only to protect against small arms fire and shrapnel.
  • Post-Armistice Use: Following the Italian surrender, the German Wehrmacht took over production and operation of the Lince, designating it the Panzerspähwagen Lince 202(i). German forces used them extensively in the Balkans and for internal security and anti-partisan roles in Italy.
