Harley-Davidson proizvedli so veliko število motornih koles za ameriško vojsko v drugi svetovni vojni in nadaljevali civilno proizvodnjo ter proizvedli vrsto velikih motornih koles V-twin, ki so bili uspešni tako na dirkališčih kot za zasebne kupce. Harley-Davidson, je na predvečer druge svetovne vojne že dobavljal vojski vojaško specifično različico svoje 45 kubičnih palcev (740 ccm) WL linije, imenovane WLA. A je v tem primeru pomenilo "vojsko". Po izbruhu vojne se je podjetje skupaj z večino drugih proizvodnih podjetij preusmerilo na vojno delo. Izdelanih je bilo več kot 90.000 vojaških motornih koles, večinoma WLA in WLC (kanadska različica), veliko jih je bilo na voljo zaveznikom. Harley-Davidson je prejel dve nagradi Army-Navy 'E', eno leta 1943 in drugo leta 1945, ki sta bili podeljeni za odličnost v proizvodnji.
