Den Spahpanzer Luchs is a German armored vehicle designed for reconnaissance missions. It has eight wheels, all of which can be steered, and can travel on land and water. It was introduced in 1975 and retired in 2009, after serving in the German Army’s armored reconnaissance battalions. The Spahpanzer Luchs has a four-person crew, consisting of a commander, a driver, a gunner and a rear-facing driver who also operates the radio.
The vehicle is equipped with a 20 mm cannon and a 7.62 mm machine gun, as well as smoke grenade launchers. The Spahpanzer Luchs is well protected by its steel armor and its low-noise running. It also has an NBC protection system and a thermal observation and gunnery system. The Spahpanzer Luchs was developed by Daimler-Benz, Porsche and Thyssen-Henschel, based on the concept of the Panzerspähwagen Sd.Kfz. 234 and 231 from World War II. The vehicle’s name means “Lynx” in English.
