De T-62 is een Sovjet belangrijkste gevechtstank die voor het eerst werd geïntroduceerd in 1961. Als verdere ontwikkeling van de T-55-serie behield de T-62 veel vergelijkbare ontwerpelementen van zijn voorganger, waaronder een laag profiel en een dik geschutskoepel. In tegenstelling tot eerdere tanks, die bewapend waren met geweerde tankkanonnen, was de T-62 de eerste tank bewapend met een smoothbore tankkanon dat APFSDS-kogels met hogere snelheden kon afvuren. Hoewel de T-62 de standaardtank in het Sovjetarsenaal werd, verwaarde hij de T-55 niet volledig op de exportmarkten vanwege de hogere productiekosten en onderhoudsvereisten in vergelijking met zijn voorganger. Hoewel de T-62 werd vervangen in Rusland en de opvolgende staten van de Sovjet-Unie, wordt hij nog steeds gebruikt in sommige landen en zijn ontwerpkenmerken werden gestandaardiseerd in daaropvolgende Sovjet- en Russische massatanks.

General Characteristics and Role
The T-62 is a Soviet main battle tank that entered production in 1961 as a direct successor to the T-55. While it shared much of its mobility and chassis design with the T-55, the T-62’s primary innovation was the introduction of the first smoothbore tank gun in service, the 115 mm U-5TS “Molot” (Hammer). This weapon was developed to counter the increasing armor protection of new NATO tanks like the American M60 Patton and the British Chieftain. The T-62 served as the backbone of the Soviet tank forces alongside the T-55 and was widely exported globally, seeing extensive combat in conflicts across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Powerplant and Mobility
