De Folland Gnat was a British fighter and trainer aircraft that was designed and produced by Folland Aircraft in the 1950s and 1960s. It was a compact and agile subsonic jet that could perform well in low-level combat. The Gnat was originally intended as a light fighter for the Royal Air Force (RAF), but it was only adopted as a trainer variant, the Gnat T.1. The Gnat F.1 fighter version was exported to Finland, Yugoslavia and India, where it saw action in several wars. The Indian Air Force was the largest operator of the Gnat and also manufactured it under licence as the HAL Ajeet. The Gnat was also famous for being the display aircraft of the RAF’s Red Arrows aerobatic team from 1965 to 1979.
