General Characteristics

The Breguet Br.1050 Alizé (French for “Trade Wind”) was a French carrier-based anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft developed in the 1950s. It was designed to operate from the French Navy’s aircraft carriers, notably the Clemenceau and Foch. The Alizé featured a conventional low-wing monoplane configuration, a crucial retractable ventral radar dome (housing the Thomson-CSF DRAA-2A radar) for surface search, and large, folding wings for compact carrier storage. The aircraft was operated by both the French Navy and the Indian Navy, with Indian Alizés seeing combat during the 1961 liberation of Goa and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The French Alizés remained in service until 2000 following several major avionics upgrades.

Powerplant and Performance

  • Engine: 1 x Rolls-Royce Dart RDa.7 Mk.21 turboprop engine.
  • Power Output: 1,565 kW (2,099 hp).
  • Propeller: 4-bladed constant-speed, fully-feathering reversible propeller.
  • Maximum Speed: 518 km/h (322 mph) at 3,050 m (10,000 ft).
  • Patrol Speed: 232 km/h (144 mph) (optimizing for endurance).
  • Endurance (Normal Mission): 5 hours 12 minutes.
  • Range: 2,500 km (1,554 mi).
  • Service Ceiling: 8,000 m (26,000 ft).
  • Design Note: The turboprop engine provided excellent endurance and low-speed handling necessary for patrol and carrier operations.

Armament and Sensors

  • Internal Armament: A single internal weapons bay for ASW ordnance.
    • 1 x Lightweight torpedo (such as L4, Mk 43, or Mk 44).
    • Or, up to 3 x 160 kg depth charges.
  • External Armament: Four underwing pylons for various stores, including:
    • Depth charges.
    • 68 mm SNEB unguided rocket pods.
    • AS.12 wire-guided anti-ship missiles (ASMs).
  • Key Sensors:
    • Retractable ventral radar (initially DRAA-2A, later upgraded to the high-performance Thomson-CSF Iguane radar in the ALM and ALH modernization programs).
    • Sonobuoys (14 carried) for acoustic detection, dispensed from the rear fuselage.
    • Later French variants received FLIR (Forward-Looking Infrared) imaging sensors and improved Electronic Support Measures (ESM).
