The Dodge WC51 was one of the most prolific and indispensable light military trucks used by the U.S. Army and Allies during World War II. It was the standard Ⅵ ton, 4×4 light truck, serving as a rugged, all-purpose utility vehicle.

The “WC” in its designation stood for a Dodge model code (W for 1941, C for ½-ton rating, though the name was retained for the later ¾-ton and 1½-ton 6×6 models), but it became popularly known as the “Weapons Carrier” due to its primary role.

Role and Variants

The WC51 was the base model Weapons Carrier without a front-mounted winch. Its twin, the WC52, was identical but featured a front winch and a slightly longer frame.

These trucks were the “beast of burden” for US and Allied forces, known for their robustness and excellent off-road performance thanks to their 4×4 drivetrain. They performed a wide range of duties, including:

  • Infantry Transport: Moving an infantry squad and their gear.
  • Cargo Haulage: Transporting ammunition, supplies, and equipment.
  • Artillery Prime Mover: Towing light artillery pieces and anti-tank guns (such as the 57 mm M1 anti-tank gun).

The WC series formed a large family of vehicles based on the same chassis, with other notable variants including:

  • WC54: Ambulance
  • WC56/WC57: Command Reconnaissance Car
  • WC53: Carryall (an enclosed station wagon-style vehicle)
