The MAZ-543 is a heavy-duty, eight-wheeled Soviet military truck chassis designed and produced by the Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ). The most famous application of this vehicle is as the 9P117 Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) for the R-17 Elbrus missile, which is better known by its NATO reporting name, SCUD B. The MAZ-543 chassis is recognizable by its distinctive wide cab layout with two separate compartments, allowing for the massive missile to be housed between them. The Scud B missile system, first introduced in the 1960s, is a highly mobile, road-deployed tactical ballistic missile capable of delivering conventional, high-explosive, or nuclear warheads. Its operational mobility provided a critical advantage during the Cold War.
