Lla Douglas F4D Skyray was a carrier-based fighter aircraft developed by the United States Navy in the 1950s. It was the first naval fighter to achieve Mach 1 in level flight and the only delta-winged aircraft to serve in the US Navy. The Skyray had a distinctive design with a large delta wing, a long nose intake, and a tailless configuration.
The Skyray was designed to intercept Soviet bombers at high altitudes and speeds, and was armed with four 20 mm cannons and a variety of air-to-air missiles. The Skyray entered service in 1956 and served until 1964, when it was replaced by more advanced fighters such as the F-4 Phantom II. The Skyray was also used by the US Marine Corps and the US Air Force for a brief period. The Skyray earned the nickname « Ford » d’après son concepteur, Ed Heinemann, qui a travaillé pour Douglas Aircraft Company.
