General Characteristics

The Agusta-Bell AB.212 is the Italian license-built version of the U.S. Bell 212, which is a twin-engine development of the famous single-engine Bell 205 (UH-1 Huey). The dual-engine design provides significantly improved safety and performance, particularly in challenging environments (like “hot and high” conditions) and over water, making it popular for naval and paramilitary roles.

Design and Powerplant

Engine: One Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6T-3 Twin-Pac coupled turboshaft engine.
Power System: The Twin-Pac consists of two power turbines that drive a common gearbox, providing redundancy.
Thrust Output (Combined): Approximately 1,342 kW (1,800 shp) total, with the ability to maintain 671 kW (900 shp) for 30 minutes in case of a single-engine failure.
Rotor System: Two-bladed semi-rigid main rotor and a two-bladed tail rotor.
Cabin: Features a spacious cabin with sliding side doors and a flat floor, easily convertible for troop transport, medevac, or cargo.
Naval Variant (AB.212ASW): Developed by Agusta, this variant features a large radar dome above the cockpit, corrosion protection, and equipment for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), including dipping sonar and the ability to carry torpedoes.
