The Studebaker US6 (G630) was a highly successful series of 2½-ton 6×6 and 5-ton 6×4 military trucks manufactured by the Studebaker Corporation and REO Motor Car Company during World War II. While built to US Army Ordnance Corps specifications, the vast majority of the nearly 220,000 units produced were exported to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program, where it became an indispensable workhorse for the Red Army.

Service and Legacy

The “Studer” in Soviet Service

  • Primary User: The Soviet Union was the largest foreign operator, receiving approximately 100,000 to 150,000 trucks. Soviet soldiers affectionately nicknamed it the “Studer” or “King of Roads” for its reliability and robust off-road performance.
  • Critical Role: The US6 was crucial for the Red Army’s logistics, especially during the offensive phases of the war, where its 6×6 (all-wheel-drive) capabilities excelled on poor roads and muddy terrain.
  • Key Applications:
    • Artillery Prime Mover: Towing anti-tank guns and field artillery.
    • Transport: Moving troops and supplies over long distances.
    • Katyusha Platform: The truck was famously adapted to carry the BM-13N and BM-8 “Katyusha” multiple rocket launchers, becoming the iconic mobile artillery system of the Red Army.
  • Engine Reliability: Its Hercules JXD engine, with a low compression ratio, was renowned for its ability to run reliably on the low-quality, low-octane gasoline available on the Eastern Front.
  • Post-War Influence: The design strongly influenced post-war Soviet truck development, particularly the ZiS-151 and later the ZiL-157 series.

US Service and Production

  • Design Origin: It was developed in competition with designs from General Motors (GMC CCKW) and International Harvester (IHC M-5-6), all for the US Army’s standard 2½-ton truck class.
  • Export Focus: The US military predominantly used the GMC CCKW, assigning the US6 primarily to the Lend-Lease program. However, the US Army did use the US6 for heavy-duty construction in the US, such as on the Alcan (Alaska) Highway y el Ledo Road in Asia.
  • Total Production: Un total de 219,882 US6 trucks were built from 1941 to 1945 by Studebaker and its subcontractor, REO Motor Car Company.
