C’est l’un des appareils les plus connus de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, notamment grâce à la série télévisée Les Têtes brûlées. Il s’illustra essentiellement dans le Pacifique, servant à la fois au sein de l’US Navy et de l’US Marine Corps. Le Corsair wurde hauptsächlich während der Pazifik-Kampagnen eingesetzt, um gegen den neuen Feind der kaiserlichen japanischen Armee ab 1943 zu kämpfen. Zwischen dem 7. und 30. April 1945 wurde am Corsair wurde von der US Navy in der Schlacht von Okinawa mit Unterstützung von 192 weiteren Korsair des Marine Corps mit 305 Flugzeugen eingesetzt. Von 600 Missionen gewannen diese Einheiten 124 Siege und brachten den Corsair zum legendären Flugzeug und wurden "Sweetheart of Okinawa" genannt. Insgesamt hatte das Flugzeug mehr als 2140 Siege und war damit das zweitgrößte gutgeschriebene Flugzeug im Pazifik, und nur 189 Flugzeuge wurden im Luftkampf abgeschossen.
