General Characteristics and Role

The AMX-10P is a French Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) designed and manufactured by GIAT (now Nexter). Developed in the late 1960s, it entered service in the mid-1970s, replacing the older AMX-VCI. The AMX-10P’s primary role is to transport infantry soldiers into battle while providing fire support and protection against small arms and artillery fragmentation. It was one of the first Western IFVs to mount a powerful 20 mm cannon, giving it significantly greater offensive capability against other light armored vehicles and dug-in troops compared to contemporary armored personnel carriers. Notably, the AMX-10P is fully amphibious without special preparation, a key requirement for the French Army.
