E. B. "Sledgehammer" SLEDGE se narodil a vyrostl v Mobile. Na konci roku 1943 se přihlásil do americké námořní pěchoty. Po základním výcviku byl poslán na tichomořské bojiště, kde bojoval u Peleliu a Okinawy, dvou nejprudších bitev druhé světové války. Po japonské kapitulaci sloužil Sledge v Číně jako součást okupačních sil. Po návratu domů získal titul Ph.D. z biologie a nastoupil na fakultu Alabama College (později University of Montevallo), kde učil až do důchodu. Sledge zpočátku psal o svých válečných zážitcích, aby je vysvětlil své rodině, ale jeho žena ho přesvědčila, aby se pokusil o publikaci. Sledge zemřel 3. března 2001.
