E. B. "Sledgehammer" SLEDGE nasceu e cresceu em Mobile. No final de 1943, alistou-se no Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais dos EUA. Após o treinamento básico, ele foi enviado para o Teatro do Pacífico, onde lutou em Peleliu e Okinawa, duas das batalhas mais ferozes da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Após a rendição japonesa, Sledge serviu na China como parte da força de ocupação. Ao voltar para casa, obteve um ph.D. em biologia e juntou-se à faculdade do Alabama College (mais tarde a Universidade de Montevallo), onde lecionou até a aposentadoria. Sledge inicialmente escreveu sobre suas experiências de guerra para explicá-las para sua família, mas ele foi persuadido por sua esposa a procurar publicação. Sledge morreu em 3 de março de 2001.
