E. B. Rogės – su senąja veisle: Peleliu ir Okinavoje

E. B. "Sledgehammer" SLEDGE gimė ir užaugo Mobiliuose. 1943 m. pabaigoje įstojo į JAV jūrų pėstininkų korpusą. Po pagrindinių mokymų jis buvo išsiųstas į Ramiojo vandenyno teatrą, kur kovojo Peleliu ir Okinavoje, dviejuose nuožmiausiuose II pasaulinio karo mūšiuose. Po japonų pasidavimo Sledge tarnavo Kinijoje kaip okupacinių pajėgų dalis. Grįžęs namo, jis įgijo biologijos daktaro laipsnį ir įstojo į Alabamos koledžo (vėliau Montevallo universiteto) fakultetą, kur dėstė iki pensijos. Sledge'as iš pradžių rašė apie savo karo patirtį, kad paaiškintų jas savo šeimai, tačiau žmona jį įkalbėjo siekti publikavimo. Rogės mirė 2001 m. kovo 3 d.
