The Ryan PT-22 Recruit is a military trainer aircraft used by the United States Army Air Corps and its successor the United States Army Air Forces for basic pilot training during World War II. It is a biplane with a monocoque fuselage, a 160 hp Kinner R-540 radial engine, and a modified landing gear. The PT-22 was developed from the civilian Ryan ST series, which was popular among private pilots and flight schools. The PT-22 was the first purpose-built monoplane trainer for the US military, and more than 1,000 were produced until 1942. Some of them were also exported to other countries, such as China, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. The PT-22 Recruit was a reliable and agile aircraft that provided a good introduction to flying for many future combat pilots.
