Den Vickers Viscount was a British medium-range turboprop airliner first flown in 1948 by Vickers-Armstrongs. A design requirement from the Brabazon Committee, it entered service in 1953 and was the first turboprop-powered airliner. The Viscount was well received by the public for its cabin conditions, which included pressurisation, reductions in vibration and noise, and panoramic windows. It became one of the most successful and profitable of the first post-war transport aircraf, 445 Viscounts were built for a range of international customers, including in North America.

General Characteristics and Role

The Vickers Viscount was a pioneering British medium-range turboprop airliner and the world’s first turboprop aircraft to enter scheduled passenger service (1953). The V.810 series, which includes the V.818 variant (like the ones built for Cubana de Aviación and Trans-Australia Airlines), was the final major stretch and refinement of the Viscount design. The V.810 series featured more powerful Rolls-Royce Dart engines and increased fuel capacity, making it a faster, longer-range version suitable for the competitive medium-haul routes of the late 1950s and 1960s. The aircraft was widely praised for its smooth ride and low cabin noise, a significant improvement over piston-engined contemporaries.
