År 1937 Hanomag (på andra) utsågs av tyska Wehrmacht för att utveckla en medium halvspårig pansarpersonalbärare, som kunde följa tankarna i Panzer Divisions. Produktionen startade 1939 och fortsatte fram till 1943. 251 fungerade som grund för många varianter, över 4000 enheter byggdes totalt. Vår modell är grundversionen beväpnad med två 7,92 mm MG-34. Fordonet nådde en maxhastighet på 50 km/h och hade en räckvidd på 300 km. Det kunde bära 12 Panzergrenadiers.
