Komisia Galaxia Lockheed C-5 is a large military transport aircraft originally designed and built by Lockheed, and now maintained and upgraded by its successor, Lockheed Martin. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsized and oversized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy has many similarities to its smaller Lockheed C-141 Starlifter predecessor, and the later Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. The C-5 is among the largest military aircraft in the world.

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft designed and built by Lockheed. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsized and oversized cargo, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy has many similarities to its smaller predecessor, the C-141 Starlifter, and the later C-17 Globemaster III. The C-5 is among the largest military aircraft in the world.
The C-5 has a distinctive high-wing design with 25 degrees of wing sweep and four turbofan engines mounted on pylons beneath the wings. The C-5 also features a nose cargo door and a rear cargo door/ramp that can both be opened in flight for aerial delivery of paratroopers or cargo. The C-5 has a voluminous cargo compartment that can accommodate up to 36 pallets or a variety of vehicles, tanks, helicopters, or other large items. The C-5 can carry a maximum payload of 122 tons (110 metric tons) or a maximum takeoff weight of 381 tons (345 metric tons).
The C-5 entered service with the USAF in 1970 and has been upgraded and modernized several times since then. The current version, the C-5M Super Galaxy, features new engines, avionics, and reliability improvements that extend its service life and enhance its performance. The C-5M can fly faster, farther, and higher than any previous C-5 model. The C-5M also has the highest cargo capacity of any airlifter in the world. The C-5M is expected to remain in service until at least 2040.
