Ямагири (DD-152) is an Asagiri-class destroyer in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. (JMSDF) It is the first major combat vessel in the JMSDF to have a female captain. On February 29, 2016 Miho Otani became the first woman to command a destroyer in active duty the service. She had previously commanded a training destroyer. As of 2016 the vessel had around 10 female crew members with designated accommodation and toilets for them. Otani was captain from February 2016 to February 2017.

General Characteristics and Role

The JDS Yamagiri (やまぎり, DD-157) is an Asagiri-class destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The Asagiri class was designed as a multi-purpose workhorse, fulfilling various roles within the fleet, but primarily focusing on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-air warfare (AAW). The class was an incremental improvement over the preceding Hatsuyuki class, featuring enhanced command and control facilities and a slightly more capable helicopter landing deck. The vessels are powered by a modern Combined Gas turbine And Gas turbine (COGAG) system, providing high speed and maneuverability. The Yamagiri was deployed as part of Japan’s efforts to enhance maritime security and participate in international peace-keeping operations.

Anti-Ship Missiles: 8 x Harpoon anti-ship missile canisters.
Anti-Air Missiles: 1 x Sea Sparrow SAM launcher (eight cells).
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): ASROC anti-submarine rocket launcher and two triple 324 mm torpedo tubes.
CIWS: 2 x Phalanx 20 mm Close-in Weapon Systems.
Aircraft: Capable of carrying and operating 1 x SH-60J/K ASW helicopter.
Sensors: Equipped with modern radar and sonar systems for full air and subsurface detection and tracking.
