Tthe Morris Handlowych C8 FAT (Field Artillery Tractor), commonly known as a Quad, is an artillery tractor used by the British and Commonwealth (including Canadian Army) forces during the Second World War. It was used to tow field artillery pieces, such as the 25-pounder gun-howitzer, and anti-tank guns, such as the 17-pounder. Although its sloped sides suggest otherwise, the Quad was not armoured.

General Characteristics

The Morris Commercial C8 FAT (Field Artillery Tractor), universally known as the “Quad” due to its four-wheeled, four-wheel drive configuration, was the primary British and Commonwealth artillery tractor of World War II. It was specifically designed to tow medium artillery pieces like the highly successful Ordnance QF 25-pounder gun-howitzer and later, the Ordnance QF 17-pounder anti-tank gun. The vehicle featured a distinctively sloped, “beetle-back” body, which, contrary to popular belief, was not armored, but was designed to facilitate chemical weapon decontamination and allow a gun traversing platform to be carried on the roof. Over 10,000 units were built between 1939 and 1945.

Logistics and Service

Primary Role: Towed the 25-pounder gun and its No. 27 limber (carriage) which carried extra ammunition.
Ammunition Capacity: Capable of carrying 24 complete boxed rounds of 25-pounder ammunition and space for other anti-tank shells and equipment.
Variants: The C8 underwent several changes (Mk I, Mk II, Mk III) relating to the axle design, tire size, and bodywork, including the later square-shaped “No. 5 body” (Mk III).
Extended Service: The Quad saw service in every major theatre of WWII, including North Africa and Normandy, and remained in British service through the Korean War until it was finally replaced in 1959.
