Despite having been designed from 1933 as a rather slow but well-armoured light infantry support tank, the type was initially rejected by the French Infantry because it proved difficult to steer while driving cross-country, and was instead adopted in 1936 by the French Cavalry.

Tthe 105mm leFH auf Hotchkiss 39H was a self-propelled howitzer used by the German army during World War II. It was based on the chassis of the French Hotchkiss H39 light tank, which was captured in large numbers by the Germans after the fall of France in 1940. The original turret was removed and replaced by a fixed superstructure that housed a 105mm leFH 18 light field howitzer, a standard artillery piece of the Wehrmacht. The vehicle had a crew of four and carried 32 rounds of ammunition. It was lightly armored and had a top speed of 36 km/h.
105 mm leFH auf Hotchkiss 39H miał zapewnić mobilne wsparcie artyleryjskie dla szybko poruszających się dywizji pancernych. Mógł strzelać pociskami odłamkowo-burzącymi na duże odległości, w trybie ognia bezpośredniego lub pośredniego. Pojazd wyposażono również w karabin maszynowy do samoobrony. Miał jednak kilka wad, takich jak duża masa, niska niezawodność, ograniczony obrót i elewacja działa oraz podatność na ogień przeciwnika. W latach 1942-1943 zbudowano tylko 48 pojazdów, które w ograniczonym stopniu służyły na froncie wschodnim i w Normandii.
