The F-104 Starfighter was a supersonic fighter aircraft developed by Lockheed in the 1950s. It was designed as a lightweight, high-performance interceptor with a powerful engine and a thin, swept-back wing. The F-104 set several speed and altitude records and was widely exported to NATO and other allied countries. However, it also faced many problems, such as engine failures, low maneuverability, short range and a high accident rate. The F-104 was retired from US service in 1969, but continued to fly with some foreign air forces until 2004.
