Self-propelled artillery

The Archer Artillery System or Archer – FH77BW L52 is an international project aimed at developing a next-generation self-propelled artillery system for Sweden and Norway. The heart of the system is a fully automated 155 mm/L52 gun howitzer and a remote controlled weapon station mounted on a modified 6×6 chassis of the Volvo A30D, all-terrain articulated hauler. The crew and engine compartment is heavily armoured and the cab is fitted with bullet and fragmentation-proof windows. Aside from this, the system consists of an ammunition resupply vehicle, a support vehicle, BONUS Sensor-fuzed Artillery Shell and the M982 Excalibur guided projectile.

The Bofors Archer, or Archer – FH77BW L52, is a highly mobile, fully automated, self-propelled howitzer developed in Sweden. It represents a new generation of wheeled artillery systems designed to deliver rapid, accurate, and protected fire support.

Key Features

  • Main Weapon: The heart of the system is a 155 mm L/52 gun-howitzer, which is a fully automated version of the Bofors FH77 towed howitzer.
  • Vehicle Platform: The system is mounted on a modified 6×6 articulated all-terrain truck chassis, originally the Volvo A30D, giving it excellent off-road mobility and high road speed.
  • Automation and Protection:
    • The entire gun system, including loading, laying, and firing, is controlled remotely from inside the armored cab.
    • This feature ensures that the crew is never exposed to counter-battery fire or other threats during a fire mission.
    • The armored cab provides protection against small arms fire, shell fragments, and mine blasts.
  • Rapid Deployment: The Archer is designed for “shoot-and-scoot” operations, taking less than 30 seconds to stop and fire the first round, and equally fast to move again after firing. This high speed of action significantly improves survivability.

Performance Capabilities

  • Ammunition: It carries 21 complete rounds in an automated magazine, and can fire all NATO-standard 155 mm ammunition.
  • Range:
    • With standard high-explosive rounds, the range is approximately 30 km.
    • Using extended range or base bleed ammunition, the range increases to over 40 km.
    • With precision-guided munitions like the M982 Excalibur, its range extends beyond 50 km.
  • Rate of Fire: The system can achieve a high rate of fire, including a burst of three rounds in under 20 seconds.
  • MRSI Capability: It is capable of Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI), where multiple shells are fired at different trajectories to all land on the target at the same time.
