Developed as part of the rebuilding of Germany’s armoured fighting vehicle industry, the Marder has proven to be a successful and solid infantry fighting vehicle design. While it does include a few unique features, such as the fully remote machine gun on the rear deck, it is overall a simple and conventional machine with rear exit hatch and side gun ports for mounted infantry to fire through. The Marder is currently being replaced by its successor, the Puma.

The Marder 1A3 is a German infantry fighting vehicle that has been in service since 1971. It is designed to transport and support infantry troops in combat, as well as provide anti-tank and anti-aircraft capabilities. The Marder 1A3 has a crew of three: a driver, a gunner and a commander. It can also carry up to six infantrymen in the rear compartment.
Om met de Marder 1A3 te mogen rijden, moet u een speciale opleiding volgen bij de Fahrschule Marder (Rijschool Marder). In deze cursus leert u hoe u het voertuig moet bedienen en onderhouden, en hoe u moet omgaan met verschillende terrein- en weersomstandigheden. U leert ook hoe u kunt communiceren met andere voertuigen en eenheden met behulp van de radio- en intercomsystemen.
De Fahrschule Marder bevindt zich in de Panzertruppenschule in Münster, Nedersaksen. De cursus duurt zes weken en bestaat uit zowel theorie- als praktijklessen. Aan het einde van de cursus moet je slagen voor een schriftelijk examen en een rijexamen. Als je slaagt, ontvang je een certificaat dat je kwalificeert om de Marder 1A3 in elke situatie te besturen.
