Il veicolo fu diretto per la prima volta dalle unità meccanizzate di fanteria dell'esercito degli Stati Uniti in Vietnam nell'aprile 1962. L'M113 era il veicolo corazzato più utilizzato dell'esercito degli Stati Uniti nella guerra del Vietnam, guadagnandosi il soprannome di "Drago Verde" dai Viet Cong in quanto era usato per sfondare pesanti boschetti in mezzo alla giungla per attaccare e superare le posizioni nemiche, ma in gran parte noto come APC e ACAV (veicolo d'assalto di cavalleria corazzata) dalle forze alleate.
