USS New Jersey (BB-62) (« Grand J » Ou « Dragon Noir ») is an Iowa-class battleship, and was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named after the US state of New Jersey. New Jersey earned more battle stars for combat actions than the other three completed Iowa-class battleships, and was the only US battleship providing gunfire support during the Vietnam War. During World War II, New Jersey shelled targets on Guam and Okinawa, and screened aircraft carriers conducting raids in the Marshall Islands. During the Korean War, she was involved in raids up and down the North Korean coast, after which she was decommissioned into the United States Navy reserve fleets, better known as the « flotte de boules à mites ».

The USS New Jersey participated in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War, and the Persian Gulf War. It earned 19 battle stars, the most of any US battleship, and was nicknamed « The Big J » Ou « Dragon Noir ».
The USS New Jersey was launched in 1942 and commissioned in 1943. It joined the Pacific Fleet and supported the Allied campaigns in the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. It also served as the flagship of Admiral William Halsey. After the war, it was decommissioned in 1948 and placed in the reserve fleet.
The USS New Jersey was reactivated in 1950 for the Korean War. It provided naval gunfire support for UN forces on the Korean Peninsula and bombarded targets along the coast of North Korea. The USS New Jersey was reactivated again in 1968 for the Vietnam War. It conducted shore bombardment missions against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese targets in South Vietnam and North Vietnam. It also supported Operation Sea Dragon, a naval interdiction campaign against enemy supply lines. It was decommissioned for the third time in 1969 and placed in mothballs.
The USS New Jersey was reactivated for the last time in 1982 as part of President Ronald Reagans naval expansion program. It underwent a modernization that equipped it with cruise missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, and electronic warfare systems. It was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean, where it participated in operations against Libya, Lebanon, and Iran.
