E. B. "Sledgehammer" SLEDGE wurde in Mobile geboren und wuchs dort auf. Ende 1943 trat er in das U.S. Marine Corps ein. Nach der Grundausbildung wurde er auf den pazifischen Kriegsschauplatz geschickt, wo er bei Peleliu und Okinawa kämpfte, zwei der heftigsten Schlachten des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Nach der japanischen Kapitulation diente Sledge in China als Teil der Besatzungstruppe. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die Heimat promovierte er in Biologie und trat der Fakultät des Alabama College (später University of Montevallo) bei, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung lehrte. Sledge schrieb zunächst über seine Kriegserlebnisse, um sie seiner Familie zu erklären, aber er wurde von seiner Frau überredet, sich um eine Veröffentlichung zu bemühen. Sledge starb am 3. März, 2001.
