The Churchill Infantry Tank was modified into specialized Armoured Vehicle-Launched Bridge (AVLB) and Armoured Ramp Carrier (ARK) variants to support combat engineers in overcoming obstacles.

Churchill AVLB (Armoured Vehicle-Launched Bridge)

This was a dedicated strong bridge-layerstrong that carried a folding bridge structure.

  • strong Function:strong To rapidly deploy a prefabricated bridge over a ditch or narrow gap.
  • strong Design:strong The tank’s turret was removed and replaced with a metal framework that carried a strong No. 2 Tank Bridgestrong.
  • strong Deployment:strong The bridge was hinged and deployed horizontally by the vehicle, creating a passage for other armored vehicles (up to 30 feet long).
  • strong Usage:strong Manned by the Royal Armoured Corps. Post-war versions were also developed on the strong Churchill Mk VIIstrong chassis.

Churchill ARK (Armoured Ramp Carrier)

This specialized vehicle literally strong became the bridgestrong itself, part of the famous “Hobart’s Funnies.”

  • strong Function:strong The ARK was driven into an obstacle (like a ditch, crater, or up against a sea wall) to act as a self-propelled ramp or roadway.
  • strong Design:strong It consisted of a turretless Churchill hull fitted with fixed strong trackwaysstrong along the body and hinged strong rampsstrong at both the front and rear.
  • strong Variants:strong
    • strong Ark Mk I:strong Designed for use against vertical obstacles like strong sea wallsstrong (used in the D-Day landings).
    • strong Ark Mk II:strong Featured a wider trackway on the left side to accommodate narrower-wheeled vehicles as well as tanks.
  • strong Role:strong It was considered an “expendable” temporary structure, essential for breaching coastal defenses and anti-tank ditches.

Both variants were crucial to the mobility of the Allied forces, ensuring infantry and armor could maintain momentum across difficult terrain and defenses.
