This book examines the technology and strategy that defined the outcome of the battles between the King Tiger and the IS-2. The Soviets had been quick to develop tanks that could fight the Tiger on an equal footing, but these were developed as part of a completely different strategy than that employed by the Germans. The King Tiger was a modern marvel, and remained unmatched in one-on-one combat. Technologically superior, with greater firepower and better armour than the Soviet IS-2, the King Tiger was a formidable opponent. However, the IS-2 was lighter, more manoeuvrable and most importantly, far more numerous. With overwhelming numerical superiority the Soviets were able to simply overwhelm their opponents, negating the technical superiority of the King Tiger.

Le Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) (ce qui signifiait : « véhicule de combat blindé tchécoslovaque, modèle 1938 ») était le nom donné par les Allemands à un char d’assaut tchécoslovaque fabriqué dans les usines de chars Škoda qu’ils avaient mis au service de leur industrie de guerre durant l’année 1939 avant l’éclatement du confit. Le nom que lui donnait l’armée tchécoslovaque était LT vz. 38. Ce véhicule de combat blindé fut conçu par les Tchécoslovaques à partir de 1935. Il a eu du succès à l’exportation, avec 50 chars exportés vers l’Iran, 24 vers la Suisse et autant vers le Pérou. L’armée tchécoslovaque en commande 150, mais ceux-ci ne sont pas entrés en service avant l’occupation du pays par l’Allemagne en 1939. Les occupants allemands ont ordonné la poursuite de la production entre 1938 et 1942. Au total, lorsque la production cessa en juin 1942, 1411 Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) (modèles A à G) avaient été fabriqués.

Un set de décalcomanies de la marque Bison Decals les décalcomanies “US M4A3E8 ‘Easy Eight’ in Germany 1945” .
Ce char trouve ses origines dans la loi Lend-Lease (prêt-bail) qui permet aux anglais et aux russes de bénéficier de grandes quantités de matériel américain. Les Anglais qui reçurent une grande quantité de Sherman M4 s’aperçurent vite que ce char soutenait la comparaison avec le Panzerkampfwagen IV en termes de blindage mais pas en termes de puissance de feu. Ce problème s’amplifiait encore contre les chars Panzerkampfwagen V Panther et Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger. De plus les Britanniques bénéficiaient depuis 1942 d’un canon antichar performant, l’Ordnance QF 17 pounder. Il décidèrent donc de monter ce canon sur la châssis d’un Sherman : le Firefly (luciole) était né.
