Design and Innovation
The T-54 revolutionized tank design with several key features that influenced Cold War tank development globally:
- Low Profile: Its squat, compact design gave it a lower silhouette compared to contemporary Western tanks like the M47/M48 Patton, making it harder to hit.
- Hemispherical Turret: The distinctive dome-shaped, cast turret minimized the risk of a “shot trap” and provided excellent inherent ballistic protection.
- Powerful Gun: The 100 mm D-10T gun was a significant increase in firepower over the 85 mm of the late-war T-34/85 and was highly effective.
- NBC Protection (T-55): Later variants (T-55) were among the first tanks equipped with an effective Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) protection system, a critical factor during the Cold War.
Historical Note: The T-54/T-55 series is widely considered the most-produced tank in military history, with estimates ranging from 86,000 to over 100,000 units built worldwide (including licensed copies like the Chinese Type 59).
