Den Boeing EA-18G Growler is a carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft that provides tactical jamming and electronic protection to U.S. military forces and allies around the world. The Growler is a variant of the F/A-18F Super Hornet that has been modified to carry a range of advanced sensors and weapons for suppressing enemy air defenses. The Growler can operate in conjunction with other aircraft or independently to disrupt, degrade or deny the use of the electromagnetic spectrum by hostile forces.
Den Growler has a crew of two: a pilot and an electronic warfare officer (EWO) who operates the mission systems and coordinates with other assets. The Growler can carry up to five ALQ-99 jamming pods, as well as AIM-120 AMRAAM and AGM-88 HARM missiles for self-defense and strike missions. The Growler also has the AN/APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, which provides enhanced situational awareness and targeting capabilities. The Growler is a vital component of the U.S. Navy’s air wing, as it enables other aircraft to perform their missions more effectively and safely in contested environments.
