E. B. "Sledgehammer" SLEDGE föddes och växte upp i Mobile. I slutet av 1943 tog han värvning i den amerikanska marinkåren. Efter grundutbildningen skickades han till Stillahavsteatern där han stred vid Peleliu och Okinawa, två av de hårdaste slagen under andra världskriget. Efter den japanska kapitulationen tjänstgjorde Sledge i Kina som en del av ockupationsstyrkan. När han återvände hem tog han en doktorsexamen i biologi och gick med i fakulteten vid Alabama College (senare University of Montevallo), där han undervisade fram till pensioneringen. Sledge skrev först om sina krigsupplevelser för att förklara dem för sin familj, men han övertalades av sin fru att söka publicering. Sledge avled den 3 mars 2001.
