It was an essential piece of heavy logistics equipment, indispensable for managing the growing weight of German armor and artillery.
Primary Functions
The Famo’s colossal power and excellent off-road performance made it irreplaceable in two main capacities:
- Tank Recovery: This was its most vital role. The Famo was the standard vehicle for pulling damaged or stuck tanks. - 8.8 cm Flak 18 (Sfl.) auf Zugkraftwagen 18t: A small number of Famos were converted to self-propelled anti-aircraft/anti-tank guns by mounting the fearsome 88 mm gun directly onto the chassis.
