Čaj Sd.Kfz. 9 Schwerer Zugkraftwagen 18t (Heavy Towed Motor Vehicle 18 ton), commonly known as the Famo after its primary manufacturer (Fahrzeug- und Motorenbau GmbH), was the largest and heaviest half-track vehicle produced in quantity by Germany during World War II. It was an essential piece of heavy logistics equipment, indispensable for managing the growing weight of German armor and artillery.
Primary Functions
The Famo’s colossal power and excellent off-road performance made it irreplaceable in two main capacities:
- Tank Recovery: This was its most vital role. The Famo was the standard vehicle for pulling damaged or stuck tanks. A single Famo could recover medium tanks (like the Panzer IV), while multiple units were chained together to tow heavier vehicles such as the Tigar I I Panter back from the front lines.
- Heavy Prime Mover: It was used to transport the heaviest artillery pieces and their associated ammunition and crews, including the 21 cm Mörser 18 and the 24 cm Kanone 3.
Design Features and Variants
The Famo was a rugged, open-topped vehicle designed for maximum utility rather than combat protection. It featured a long chassis with a front cab, crew seating, and a cargo bed/equipment area in the rear.
Key Specifications:
- Power Plant: It was driven by a powerful 12-cylinder Maybach HL 108 gasoline engine, delivering 270 horsepower.
- Towing Capacity: Its design allowed for a massive towing capacity, officially rated for up to 28 tonnes.
- Running Gear: It combined a conventional steerable front axle (wheels) with a sophisticated rear track assembly utilizing the German-standard interleaved roadwheels (Schachtellaufwerk) for superior off-road capability.
- Winch: Most units were equipped with a powerful winch mounted beneath the cargo deck, crucial for pulling out immobilized vehicles.
Specialized Versions:
- Sd.Kfz. 9/1 & 9/2: These were specialized recovery versions fitted with either a 6-ton or 10-ton crane in place of the cargo bed. These cranes were used for field repairs, such as lifting tank turrets or engines out of their hulls.
- 8.8 cm Flak 18 (Sfl.) auf Zugkraftwagen 18t: A small number of Famos were converted to self-propelled anti-aircraft/anti-tank guns by mounting the fearsome 88 mm gun directly onto the chassis.
