It was introduced in 1975 and retired in 2009, after serving in the German Army’s armored reconnaissance battalions. The Spahpanzer Luchs has a four-person crew, consisting of a commander, a driver, a gunner and a rear-facing driver who also operates the radio. The vehicle is equipped with a 20 mm cannon and a 7.62 mm machine gun, as well as smoke grenade launchers. The Spahpanzer Luchs is well protected by its steel armor and its low-noise running. It also has an NBC protection system and a thermal observation and gunnery system. The Spahpanzer Luchs was developed by Daimler-Benz, Porsche and Thyssen-Henschel, based on the concept of the Panzerspähwagen Sd.Kfz. 234 and 231 from World War II.
