C’est l’un des appareils les plus connus de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, notamment grâce à la série télévisée Les Têtes brûlées. Il s’illustra essentiellement dans le Pacifique, servant à la fois au sein de l’US Navy et de l’US Marine Corps. Le Corsário foi implantado principalmente durante as campanhas do Pacífico para lutar contra o novo inimigo que constituiu o Exército Imperial Japonês a partir de 1943. Entre 7 e 30 de abril de 1945, o Corsário foi implantado em 305 aeronaves pela Marinha dos EUA durante a Batalha de Okinawa, com o apoio de outros 192 Corsairs do Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais. Das 600 missões realizadas, essas unidades conquistaram 124 vitórias, trazendo o Corsair para o posto de aeronaves lendárias e sendo apelidada de "Queridinha de Okinawa". No total, esta aeronave totalizou mais de 2140 vitórias, tornando-se a segunda aeronave mais creditada no Pacífico e apenas 189 aeronaves foram alvejadas em combate aéreo.
