De 15 cm Kanone 18 (15 cm K 18) was a German heavy gun used in the Second World War. Around a hundred were built between 1939 and 1943. It was not popular in service as it was regarded as too much gun for too little shell. This caused its production to be terminated in August 1943. Many were used in coastal installations.

General Characteristics (World War II Era)

The 15 cm Kanone 18 (K 18) was a heavy German field gun developed by Rheinmetall to replace the older 15 cm K 16. It was designed for long-range counter-battery and deep support fire. Despite its impressive range, it suffered from a heavy, complex, and relatively immobile carriage, which limited its popularity and led to a low production number.

Property Value (K 18)
Role Heavy Field Gun / Long-Range Artillery
Designer/Manufacturer Rheinmetall
Entered Service 1938
Calibre 149.1 mm (5.87 in)
Barrel Length 8.20 m (26 ft 11 in) (L/55)
Weight (Firing Position) 12,460 kg (27,470 lb)
Weight (Travel Position) ~18,600 kg (41,000 lb)
Units Built 101 (Production ceased in 1943)

Design and Mobility

  • Carriage: Featured a heavy box-trail carriage, which was not well-received due to its limited mobility and traverse.
  • Recoil System: Utilized a hydro-pneumatic recoil system.
  • Breech: Horizontal sliding-block breech, manually operated.
  • Limited Traverse: The standard box trail only permitted a narrow traverse of about 10 degrees without repositioning.
  • 360° Firing: A special, heavy turntable platform could be deployed to allow full 360-degree traverse, but this required significant time and effort to assemble and disassemble.
  • Transport: For long-distance transport, the gun had to be broken down into two or three loads (barrel, carriage, and platform), each requiring its own specialized transport carriage.

Performance and Ammunition

  • Projectile Weight: 43.0 kg (95 lb) HE (High Explosive) shell.
  • Muzzle Velocity: 865 m/s (2,838 ft/s).
  • Maximum Firing Range: 24,500 m (26,790 yards). This was its main advantage.
  • Rate of Fire: Slow, approximately 2 rounds per minute.
  • Elevation: -2° to +45°.
  • Service Opinion: The K 18 was unpopular with mobile field units due to its excessive weight and difficult handling for the size of its shell. It was much more effective when used in static roles, such as coastal defense.
  • Ammunition Types: Included High Explosive (HE), Armour-Piercing (AP), and anti-concrete shells.
