The Tiran 4 was a modified version of the Soviet T-54 tank that was captured by Israel from Arab countries during the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. The Tiran 4 had several improvements over the original T-54, such as a new loader’s hatch, additional storage boxes and jerry cans, a pintle-mounted Browning machine gun, and a 105 mm M68 main gun that replaced the 100 mm D-10T. The Tiran 4 also had a fire control system and an infrared lamp from IDF Sherman tanks. The Tiran 4 served in the Israeli Defense Forces until the late 1970s, when it was replaced by more modern tanks such as the Merkava. Some of the Tiran 4 tanks were sold or donated to other countries, such as Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Chile and Ethiopia.
