Σύστημα μεταφοράς βαρέων εξοπλισμών (abbreviated as HETS) is a term applied (primarily) to a U.S. Army logistics vehicle transport system, the primary purpose of which is to transport the M1 Abrams tank. It is also used to transport, deploy, and evacuate armored personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery, armored bulldozers and other heavy vehicles and equipment of all types. The current U.S. Army vehicle used in this role is an Oshkosh-built M1070 μονάδα ελκυστήρα σε διαμορφώσεις A0 και A1, η οποία συνδέεται με ημιρυμουλκούμενο DRS Technologies M1000. Αυτός ο συνδυασμός αντικατέστησε την προηγούμενη μονάδα τρακτέρ M911 που κατασκευάστηκε στο Oshkosh και το ημιρυμουλκούμενο M747.

General Characteristics and Role

The M1070 Heavy Equipment Transport (HET) is a large, eight-wheel-drive military tractor truck built by Oshkosh Defense. It is designed specifically to transport the heaviest main battle tanks (MBTs) and armored vehicles used by the US Army, most notably the M1 Abrams tank, along with the accompanying crew members and equipment. The M1070 is typically paired with the M1000 semi-trailer to form the complete HET system. Its role is crucial for battlefield logistics, allowing high-value armored assets to be rapidly moved over long distances, preserving their operational life and reducing wear on their tracked systems.

Service History and Variants

  • Original Requirement: The M1070 was designed to replace the earlier HET, the Oshkosh M911, which lacked the capacity to carry the heaviest versions of the M1 Abrams MBT.
  • Widespread Use: It has been used extensively in every major US military operation since the Gulf War (1991), including the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, where logistics and road movement were key.
  • M1000 Trailer: The M1000 semi-trailer is designed with 40 wheels on five axle lines and features an hydraulic suspension system to ensure smooth transport of heavy, sensitive equipment.
  • International Operators: Due to its proven capability, the M1070 has been exported to numerous allied nations, including the United Kingdom (where it is known as the Oshkosh 1070F), Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
  • Upgrade (M1070A1): The A1 variant introduced in the 2010s features a significantly more powerful engine (700 hp) and improved braking and cooling systems to handle heavier modern tanks and difficult terrain.
