The M8 project was eventually canceled. Its role in the 2nd ACR was eventually taken by the M1128 Mobile Gun System.

The vehicle had a crew of three and was designed to be air-droppable by C-130 and C-17 transport planes. The XM-8 had a modular armor system that could be tailored to different threat levels and missions. The XM-8 was canceled in 1997 due to budget cuts and changing requirements.
