Petit Véhicule Protégé (“Light Protected vehicle”, also Panhard PVP) is a light, general-purpose armoured 4-wheel drive vehicle used by the French Army, made by Panhard. It is also designated as Auverland A4 AVL (Armoured Vehicle Light). Built by Auverland, it is one of the successors to the Peugeot P4.

Compact Protection for Modern Operations

潘哈德 PVP (also known by its internal designation Auverland A4 AVL) was developed to provide French “contact forces” with a level of protection that the unarmored Peugeot P4 jeep simply couldn’t offer. Designed for missions in high-threat environments like Afghanistan and Mali, the PVP bridges the gap between light utility vehicles and heavy armored personnel carriers. It is prized for its high power-to-weight ratio and compact size, which allows it to navigate narrow urban alleyways and mountain passes where larger vehicles like the VBCI or VAB cannot go.

Design and Survivability

  • Modular Armor: The hull is a composite of steel and aluminum. The base protection (Level 2) safeguards the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters, while the floor is V-shaped to deflect anti-personnel mine blasts.
  • Mobility Features: The PVP is equipped with an automatic gearbox, permanent 4×4 drive, and a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), allowing the driver to adjust tire pressure from inside the cab to cross soft sand or mud.
  • Air Transportability: Its compact dimensions were specifically chosen so that it could be transported by C-130, A400M, and even heavy-lift helicopters like the CH-53.
  • The “WASP” Station: Many French Army PVPs are fitted with the WASP remote-controlled weapon station, allowing the gunner to engage targets using a 7.62mm machine gun from the safety of the armored cabin.

Variants and Export Versions

  • PVP HD (Heavy Duty): A larger version with 5 doors and Level 3 armor, capable of carrying a 2-tonne payload.
  • PVP XL: An even larger 12-tonne variant designed for troop transport (up to 10 people) or specialized electronic warfare kits.
  • PVP Police: Used by French elite units like the RAID, these are often painted black and equipped with specialized optics and entry equipment for counter-terrorism.
  • Export Success: Beyond the French Army, the PVP has been exported to Romania, Chile (Marines), and Togo for peacekeeping operations.

Historical Context

The vehicle was born out of a 2004 contract when Auverland (which later merged with Panhard) beat out competitors to replace the aging P4. Since its introduction, it has become a staple of French peacekeeping, often seen patrolling as part of UNIFIL in Lebanon or leading convoys in the Sahel region of Africa.
