General Characteristics

The Batignolles-Châtillon Char 25t was a French experimental medium tank developed in the mid-1950s. It was designed to meet a requirement for a highly mobile, yet powerfully armed, successor to the AMX-13 light tank, aiming for a total weight of approximately 25 tons. The design was very advanced for its time, incorporating a low-profile hull, hydraulic suspension, and a key French innovation: the oscillating turret with an autoloader. Only two prototypes were manufactured before the project was abandoned in favor of the later AMX-30 Main Battle Tank.

Powerplant and Mobility

  • Engine: Gasoline, Brand “Moteur Moderne” Type 3.M-27 (First Prototype). Later proposed with more powerful engines.
  • Engine Power: 500 hp (367 kW).
  • Power/Weight Ratio: Approx. 20 hp/tonne.
  • Maximum Speed (Road): 65 km/h (40 mph).
  • Transmission: 6-speed preselective gearbox.
  • Suspension: Hydraulic suspension with four torsion bars, providing a smooth ride and potentially adjustable height.
  • Mobility Focus: The tank was designed for superior mobility and “hit-and-run” tactics, with armor protection being secondary.

Armament and Protection

  • Main Armament: 90 mm D.911 APX gun (or CN-90). This gun used an **autoloader** system.
  • Turret Type: Oscillating turret, where the entire upper section containing the gun pivots for elevation/depression, and the autoloader feeds the gun automatically.
  • Ammunition Capacity: Total of 52 shells, with 16 rounds stored in the turret’s ready rack for the autoloader.
  • Secondary Armament: 1 x 7.5 mm MAC 31 machine gun (coaxial) and 1 x 7.5 mm defense machine gun.
  • Maximum Armor (Hull Front): 50 mm (sloped at 64°).
  • Maximum Armor (Turret Front): 60 mm (sloped).
  • Armor Note: Armor was relatively thin, primarily intended to protect against heavy machine gun fire rather than anti-tank rounds.
